Rahul Dravid declines honorary doctorate from Bangalore University, says will 'earn' one

Former India captain Rahul Dravid said he would like to earn the degree by accomplishing research in the field of sports.

The Bangalore University had decided to honour the 43-year-old Dravid during its 52nd Annual Convocation ceremony on January 27. However, Dravid, who is currently the coach of India Under-19 and India 'A' teams, declined to accept the degree.

"The Honourable Governor and the Chancellor of Bangalore University had approved to confer honorary degree on Rahul Dravid, former captain of Indian cricket team, at the 52nd annual convocation of Bangalore University scheduled to be held on January 27," the university stated in its press release.

"However, Rahul Dravid while thanking Bangalore university, for recognising him for the honorary degree, has in all humility declined to accept the honorary degree, He has conveyed that he would try to earn a doctorate degree by accomplishing some form of academic research in the field of sport rather than receiving an honorary degree," the release added.

Dravid is one of the most respected modern-day batsmen, representing India in 164 Tests and 344 ODIs. Dravid amassed 13,288 Test runs and 10,889 runs in the ODIs during his illustrious 16-year career.

Rahul Dravid chosen for honorary doctorate by Bangalore University

"Rahul Dravid will be the only personality to be conferred with a doctorate this year by  Bangalore University"

Former India captain and current A team coach Rahul Dravid will be conferred with an honorary doctorate by Bangalore University at its 52nd annual convocation on January 27.

Bangalore University is the second in Karnataka to confer a doctorate on the batting legend. Gulbarga University, too, had chosen Dravid for a doctorate in 2014.

Born January 11 at Indore, Dravid grew up in Bengaluru and went to St Joseph’s Boys High School. He got a degree from the St Joseph’s College of Commerce. He was studying MBA at the St Joseph’s College of Business Administration when he was selected for the national team. He retired from international cricket in 2012 after a career that spanned a decade and a half.

“Dravid will be the only personality to be conferred with a doctorate this year,” Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor B Thimme Gowda told ET. “We have reached out to his mother about our decision.” Dravid’s mother Pushpa was a professor at the Bangalore University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering.

Dravid will be second Bengaluru-based cricketer to receive an honorary doctorate from Bangalore University. In 2013, the university conferred a doctorate on former India captain Gundappa Vishwanath.
